▶Glossary
What is Skat?
Skat is Germany's most popular card game, traditionally played by three players. With 32 cards and a wealth of tactical decisions, Skat is considered one of the most sophisticated card games in the world.
Each round, every player receives 10 cards — 2 cards form the face-down Skat. During the bidding phase, players compete for the right to become the Soloist. The highest bidder takes the Skat, discards 2 cards, and chooses the game type: a suit game (Diamonds, Hearts, Spades or Clubs), Grand (only Jacks as trumps), or Null (aim to take no tricks). The Soloist then plays alone against the two defenders.
In suit games and Grand, the Soloist needs at least 61 of 120 available card points. Ace scores 11, Ten 10, King 4, Queen 3 and Jack 2. The game value is calculated as base value × multiplier — matadors and levels like Hand, Schneider and Schwarz increase the multiplier.
